Nevada Electrician Explains the Hidden Dangers of Aluminum Wiring!

Whenever I hear “I have aluminum wiring in my house and have been advised that it is dangerous. What can I do to correct it?” I cringe a little. As a long time Nevada electrician, I’ve often seen the problems associated with this type of wire.
Aluminum wire was used in some residences in the 1960’s and 1970’s. It was also used in mobile homes (and there are a lot of mobile homes still around with aluminum wiring!).
The issue is that aluminum connections loosen and create heat, as well as aluminum wire breaks easily if nicked. The correction is to either reconnect all the splices with an approved copper to aluminum connector, or to rewire the circuits in copper of the approved size.
While these corrections may sound time consuming or expensive, it is important to understand the potential danger this type of wire can be. Your safety is important. A
Nevada electrician like Mr. Electric can help you determine the best solution for your situation.
I look forward to providing additional insight to household electrical issues.
